Board of directors positions: how to find and land one
A practical guide for experienced executives looking for paid board and advisory roles.
What board of directors positions are
A board position is a seat on the governing body of an organization. Directors oversee strategy, risk, financial reporting and leadership, and usually serve on committees such as audit, risk, remuneration or nominations.
Seats come in several forms: paid non-executive roles on company boards, advisory board roles at private and growth companies, and appointed positions on government, nonprofit, health and education boards. Some are paid, some offer equity or an honorarium, and some are voluntary. Our guide to paid board positions explains how to tell them apart.
Where open board roles are found
Most seats are never widely advertised. They are filled through networks, nomination committees and search firms. The ones that are posted appear across company career pages, specialist board listings, government appointment portals and nonprofit boards, often for only a few weeks.
The practical challenge is not finding a list. It is finding roles that are actually still open, located where you can serve, and a genuine fit for your experience.
What boards look for
Nomination committees look for a specific gap: a skill, sector or committee capability the board lacks. Strong candidates show clear governance experience, relevant sector or functional depth, independence, and the time to serve.
A board CV is not an executive resume. It leads with governance, keeps to two pages, and frames each role around oversight and outcomes rather than day-to-day management.
How to apply well
Tailor every application to the board's stated need. A short cover letter that names the gap you fill, a board CV built for that seat, and a clear independence position carry more weight than a generic submission.
Where you can, reach the board through someone who already knows it. A warm introduction is still the most reliable way in.
